A Chattogram court has sentenced a Chinese citizen named Ronggui Fan to seven years in prison for smuggling gold into the country.
Chattogram Metropolitan Sessions Judge Jebun Nessa Begum pronounced the verdict on Sunday, fining him Tk50,000.
In default, he will serve another three-month jail term as a penalty.
According to the prosecution, customs officials detained Rongui along with 24 gold bars, weighing 2.80 kg, from Hazrat Shah Amanat International Airport on May 8, 2019.
He was handed over to Patenga police station before a chargesheet against him was submitted in October of that year. The court framed the charges in February last year.
