As funeral prayers were offered for the six people killed on Tuesday amid the ongoing movement demanding cancellation of quota in government jobs, the police obstructed the ritual at Dhaka University.

According to the latest news, at least 20 sound grenade explosions and tear gas (tear shells) have been thrown by the police.

On Wednesday (July 17) afternoon, the students were stopped from performing the gayebana janaza in front of the Dhaka University (DU) Raju sculpture. After that, they offered funeral prayers in front of the residence of the Vice-Chancellor (VC).

After the gayebana janaza (funeral prayers in absentia), police lobbed sound grenades as students marched with a symbolic coffin procession from the VC‍‍`s residence to the Raju sculpture. Several journalists, including senior reporter Bhaskar Bhaduri of Jamuna Television, were injured in the incident. The Report.Live‍‍`s reporter reported that the students were dispersed and took shelter in Kalabhaban.

Apart from this, several journalists said that internet connection is not available in the DU campus.

Chase and counter chase is going on between police and students protesting for quota reform in different spots of Dhaka University (DU) as police were trying to evict the students from their halls.

Earlier in the day, police set up checkpoints at all entrances of DU to maintain peace and security in the university area.

Multiple water cannons, along with riot police, were seen on alert near the base of the Raju Memorial at the university.
