Despite resumption of gas supply from floating LNG Terminal at Moheshkhali following Cyclone Mocha, the extent of loadshedding increased further on Monday both during day and night times.
According to official sources, the country experienced more than 3000 MW of load shedding at the peak evening hours on Monday, which was higher than in the same period on Sunday.
The extent of power outages was higher on Monday than Sunday, said the officials requesting anonymity.
However, official data of the state-owned Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) shows that the country experienced almost 2500 MW of loadshedding at 12 noon on Monday to meet the demand of 12,700 MW while generation was 10,144 MW.
The BPDB officials said they received 792 million cubic feet of gas per day (mmcfd) against the requirements of 1200 mmcfd.
“The shortage forced us to keep operation of more than 25 units of gas-fired power plants closed across the country,” a top official of BPDB told UNB.
He said there is a forecast of more loadshedding for the peak evening hours which starts from 5 pm and stays until 11 pm.
Officials said different areas in Dhaka city and elsewhere had to experience a huge load shedding.
Abdur Rahman Jahangir, a resident of the city's Rampura area, said that his area has been experiencing loadshedding every alternative hour.
A similar experience was shared by Naznin Sultana, who resides in Mirpur area of the city.
She said the frequent power cuts in her area made the situation unbearable when mercury was rising with the heat wave in the peak summer.
“We’ve been really in a dire state with the frequent power outages from the morning,” said Jahangir.
