A year after the July 2024 mass uprising in Bangladesh, six unidentified bodies preserved at Dhaka Medical College Hospital have been buried by the charitable organization Anjuman Mufidul Islam.
Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge Khalid Mansur confirmed to media that the bodies were formally handed over on Thursday morning following a court order.
“We transferred the bodies to Anjuman Mufidul Islam this morning. They have completed the burial,” he said.
The six bodies had been kept in the morgue for over a year. Authorities conducted DNA profiling on the deceased and compared them with samples provided by several claimants. However, none of the tests resulted in a match, preventing identification.
“The DNA tests were done earlier, but no match was found with those who came forward claiming to be relatives,” said OC Khalid.
Kamrul Ahmed, head of Anjuman Mufidul Islam’s burial services, said, “We received the six bodies and buried them at Jurain Cemetery around 2 PM.”
Professor Dr. Kazi Golam Mokhlesur Rahman, head of Forensic Medicine at Dhaka Medical College, stated on Wednesday that forensic reports had already been handed over to police. Since the bodies could not be identified, they could not be released to any family.
“We requested the police to arrange for the bodies, and a meeting was held recently where we suggested transferring them to Anjuman Mufidul Islam,” he said. “Many people came forward claiming the bodies, but no one could confirm identity.”
Shahbagh police noted that the bodies had arrived before August 5 last year from various areas in Dhaka, including Jatrabari. According to autopsy reports, most of the deaths were caused by blunt force trauma.
The July 2024 student-led uprising, which saw widespread protests and clashes across the country, reportedly resulted in 834 deaths nationwide.
