The High Court has dismissed the case filed against renowned photographer Dr. Shahidul Alam under the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Act.
The verdict was delivered on Thursday (August 7) by the High Court bench comprising Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice Nasreen Akhter.
Senior lawyer Barrister Sara Hossain appeared on behalf of Dr. Shahidul Alam during the hearing, assisted by Barrister Priya Ahsan Chowdhury.
Earlier, the court had issued a rule asking why the case filed under the ICT Act against Dr. Shahidul Alam should not be dismissed.
On August 6, 2018, a case was filed against Shahidul Alam at Ramna Police Station under Section 57 of the now-repealed ICT Act. Subsequently, on August 12 that year, a court ordered him to be sent to jail.
The case accused Alam of spreading fabricated and provocative information through his Facebook timeline and various local and international media outlets.
The allegations claimed that his statements incited different sections of the public by presenting unverifiable and misleading information, which allegedly harmed the image of the state and portrayed the government as ineffective in the international arena.
The case further alleged that his actions amounted to an attempt to spread fear and deteriorate law and order through electronic media.
