Government firm on religious freedom: CA Dr. Yunus

Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has reiterated the interim government’s strong commitment to protecting religious freedom in Bangladesh.

In a meeting with Stephen Schneck, Chair of the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), Yunus stated that ensuring religious harmony among Bangladesh’s 171 million citizens remains a top priority.

He emphasized that all citizens, regardless of faith, are entitled to equal rights and protection.

Yunus voiced concern over misinformation that misrepresents the recent July Uprising and falsely portrays it as an extremist movement.

He asserted that such disinformation seeks to undermine the rights of minorities and destabilize the country‍‍`s social fabric.

He acknowledged that regional tensions, including violence against minorities in South Asia and the crisis in Palestine, have impacted domestic harmony. Despite this, the government is actively working to promote unity and protect vulnerable communities.

The meeting also addressed broader topics including ongoing reform initiatives, proposed constitutional amendments, and the Rohingya crisis.

Yunus affirmed that any changes to the constitution would safeguard both religious freedom and minority rights, with discussions currently ongoing with political stakeholders.

Regarding the Rohingya issue, Yunus appealed for support in resolving the long-standing crisis, stressing the urgency of action.

He warned of rising frustration among the younger population in refugee camps and emphasized the need to provide hope and lasting solutions.

“We must resolve this crisis without delay,” he said. “A generation is growing up in despair—we cannot ignore their future.”
