A group representing depositors of Islami Bank Bangladesh PLC has called for the immediate removal of the bank’s chairman, Md. Khurshid Alam, and warned of tougher nationwide protests if action is not taken within 24 hours.
The demand was made on Wednesday after members of the Islami Bank Conscious Depositors Forum submitted a memorandum to the Ministry of Finance outlining their concerns over the bank`s current leadership.
Speaking to reporters near the National Press Club, forum convener Professor Nur Un-Nabi said the organization had urged the government to remove the chairman and take steps to recover funds allegedly siphoned from the bank in previous years.
According to the forum, depositors are dissatisfied with the appointment of former Bangladesh Bank deputy governor Khurshid Alam as chairman and believe the decision does not reflect the interests of ordinary account holders.
The group warned that failure to address its demands could trigger a broader protest movement involving customers across the country. Leaders said an emergency meeting of the forum`s central committee would be held on Thursday to decide on the next course of action if no response is received.
Earlier in the day, demonstrators marched through parts of the capital and briefly blocked a key road linking Purana Paltan and Gulistan. The blockade caused temporary traffic congestion before protesters withdrew from the area following the submission of the memorandum.
The forum has been staging demonstrations for more than a week, protesting the leadership change at the bank and calling for measures aimed at protecting depositors` interests and strengthening accountability within the institution.
