Legal action will be taken for spreading misinformation: Press wing

The Press Wing of the Chief Adviser has dismissed as ‘baseless’ recent media reports alleging that the freedom fighter status of senior leaders of the Mujibnagar Government has been revoked.

The Press Wing has called on those media outlets to issue public apologies to their readers for spreading such misinformation.

The clarification came during a press conference held at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka on Wednesday afternoon.

Speaking at the event, Abul Kalam Azad Mozumdar, Deputy Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, warned: “Media houses were not given licenses to spread false news. The government will take appropriate legal action against those who propagate misleading or incorrect information.”

Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam also addressed the briefing and provided updates on the Enforced Disappearances Commission. “So far, the Commission has received 1,837 complaints. Among them, 1,350 cases have already been reviewed and verified,” he said.

He added that seven chapters of the Commission’s report on enforced disappearances will be released to the public tomorrow (Thursday).

Revealing disturbing findings, Alam said, “The main perpetrator in enforced disappearance cases has been identified as the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), particularly its Intelligence Wing. Those involved in these crimes will face justice within Bangladesh.”

He also mentioned a unique initiative by the Chief Adviser: “A special museum is being set up at Ganabhaban. As part of this, a horror-themed section will be dedicated to the harrowing realities of enforced disappearances.”

Additionally, the Press Secretary announced that Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus will travel to London on June 9. He will be accompanied by Bangladesh Bank Governor Ahsan H. Mansur and Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Chairman Dr. Mohammad Abdul Momen.
