Colombia secured a place in the World Cup knockout rounds after edging DR Congo 1-0 in a hard-fought Group K encounter on Tuesday.
A second-half strike from Daniel Munoz proved decisive in Guadalajara, sending the South American side to the top of the group with six points from two matches and guaranteeing their progression to the last 32.
The result continues Colombia`s impressive start to the tournament following their opening victory over Uzbekistan and marks a successful return to the World Cup after missing out on qualification for the 2022 finals.
Backed by a large and passionate crowd, Colombia dominated possession for long periods and created a series of chances in the opening half. However, DR Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi produced several fine saves to keep his side in the contest.
Munoz thought he had opened the scoring early in the game, but his effort was ruled out for offside. James Rodriguez, Luis Diaz and Johan Mojica also came close as Colombia repeatedly tested the Congolese defence.
Despite the pressure, DR Congo remained disciplined and gradually grew into the match, limiting Colombia`s attacking rhythm and creating occasional opportunities of their own.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 76th minute when Crystal Palace defender Munoz found the net. His effort took a deflection on its way past Mpasi, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance.
DR Congo pushed forward in search of an equaliser during the closing stages and nearly rescued a point when Nathanael Mbuku unleashed a powerful effort, but Colombian goalkeeper Camilo Vargas reacted sharply to preserve his team`s lead.
The victory leaves Colombia two points clear of Portugal, who earlier defeated Uzbekistan 5-0 with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring twice.
Colombia will conclude their group-stage campaign against Portugal in Miami, while DR Congo face Uzbekistan in a must-win match as they seek to keep alive their hopes of reaching the knockout phase.
The African side, appearing at the World Cup for the first time since 1974, still retain a slim chance of advancing depending on results in the final round of group matches.
