The National Press Club has expressed deep concern over the situation caused by Prothom Alo's irresponsible and unprofessional journalism in publishing the news by making a photo card with a child's photo on Independence Day with an irrelevant statement. At the same time, concern was expressed regarding prosecution and arrest of journalists under the Digital Security Act at a meeting of the management committee of the National Press Club on Sunday (April, 2).
Such unprofessional behavior of a leading newspaper is in no way desirable, the committee said in the meeting. Accountability is inextricably linked to freedom of the press. Everyone expects accountability from a news media like Prothom Alo.
Also, expressing deep concern about the use of digital security law on journalists, the committee said, "It was necessary to send the complaint to the Press Council for preliminary verification of the truth of the complaint raised before applying this law to journalists or news media."
Besides, in the light of specific recommendations in the meeting, it was requested to quickly amend some sections of this law and take special measures to stop misuse of the law. The committee hopes that this situation will end soon.
The meeting also strongly condemned the recent attack on journalists during an iftar party of BNP.
