Police in Narail have rescued a newborn baby from the Parbisnupur area under Kalia upazila of the district on Thursday night some 23 days after the infant was stolen Khulna Medical College Hospital.
The baby was handed over to his mother Ranima Begum on Friday in presence of his father, Turab Ali and officials of Khulna Metropolitan Police.
Momtazul Haque, officer-in-charge of Sonadanga Model Police Station, said they raided the residence of a couple identified as Ranu Khanam and Lalon Molla at village Parbisnupur and rescued the 23-day-old baby from their possession before arresting the couple.
The arrestees claimed that they bought the newborn baby from a woman with Taka 1.80 lakh from the capital on January 25 last as they have no child.
On January 24, Ranima Begum, a residence of Fakirhat upazila under Bagerhat gave birth to the baby boy.
Hours later, the baby went missing after Ranima handed over the baby to an unknown woman in front of KMCH as her husband and other relatives engaged in a fight with an ambulance driver centring ambulance fare.
But the woman fled away along with the baby from the spot.
Turab Ali, the father of the baby, filed a case with Sonadanga Model Police Station accusing unknown persons.
