BNP leader Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Tuesday urged coordinated efforts to address the growing measles outbreak in the country.
Speaking at a rally marking World Health Day 2026, he warned that anti-vaccine misinformation, superstition and gaps in the health sector are increasing the risk of the disease.
The programme began at Central Shaheed Minar and ended at the National Press Club, where he called on the government, health authorities and medical professionals to work together to contain the spread.
Referring to this year’s theme, “Together for health, stand with science,” Rizvi stressed the importance of science-based healthcare, saying proper diagnosis and treatment depend on it.
He said the recent rise in measles cases is linked to misinformation and declining awareness, noting that similar trends are seen globally due to anti-vaccine campaigns.
Citing recent data, he claimed that dozens of deaths have been reported in recent weeks, with Rajshahi, Chapainawabganj and Mymensingh identified as key hotspots.
Rizvi also highlighted the need for stronger investment in health research, saying current funding levels are too low to support meaningful scientific work.
He urged authorities to act quickly and strengthen public health measures to prevent further loss of life, expressing hope that healthcare professionals will play a leading role in tackling the outbreak.
