The interim government’s Economic Advisor, Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed, has assured that recent comments by US National Intelligence Director, Tulsi Gabbard, about Bangladesh will not affect the strong bilateral ties between the US and Bangladesh.
He emphasized that economic relations between the two countries remain stable and unaffected by the remarks.
Speaking to the press after a meeting of the Advisory Committee on Procurement at the Secretariat on Tuesday, Dr. Salehuddin addressed the concerns that arose following Tulsi Gabbard’s statements.
Gabbard, who is currently visiting India, mentioned in an interview with NDTV World that the US is "deeply concerned" about the alleged violence and persecution of religious minorities in Bangladesh.
However, the Economic Advisor downplayed these concerns, stating that such remarks won’t have any significant effect on the country’s international relationships or economy.
"Despite what some may write or say, Bangladesh has come a long way. We were once on the verge of a crisis, but now we’ve recovered and are doing well," he remarked.
He further reassured that the country’s economy is stable, adding, "There’s no reason for anyone to be pessimistic about Bangladesh`s economic situation."
Dr. Salehuddin also mentioned that the government is addressing challenges posed by certain business groups.
He pointed out that some businesspeople attempt to manipulate systems, but the government has been taking steps to ensure control.
He highlighted that the backlog in product clearance has been resolved, and the country is steadily recovering.
Responding to Gabbard’s statements, the Chief Advisor’s Press Wing had earlier dismissed her claims as "baseless" and not reflective of the current situation in Bangladesh.
