Special cabinet meeting begins to approve proposed budget

A special cabinet meeting is currently underway to approve the proposed budget for the 2026–27 fiscal year. The meeting is being chaired by Tarique Rahman.

The meeting began around 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban (National Parliament complex). The proposed national budget for the 2026–27 fiscal year is expected to be approved during the session.

After cabinet approval, the budget-related bill will be signed by President Mohammed Shahabuddin. Following this, the national budget will be presented at 3:00 p.m. by Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury.

This marks the first budget of the government led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, as well as the first budget to be presented by Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury in his role as finance minister.

According to sources, the proposed budget size for FY 2026–27 is expected to be around Tk 9.38 trillion, with a revenue target of Tk 6.95 trillion. The budget deficit is projected at Tk 2.43 trillion.

In addition, the budget is expected to set a GDP growth target of 6.5% and an inflation target of 7.5% for the upcoming fiscal year.
