The Customs, Excise and VAT Commissionerate, Sylhet, recorded nearly 15% growth in value-added tax (VAT) revenue collection in the 2025–26 fiscal year compared to the previous year.
The commissionerate deposited Tk1,570 crore into the state treasury during the recently concluded fiscal year, collecting Tk208 crore more than the previous year.
According to commissionerate sources, VAT revenue collection stood at Tk1,362 crore in FY2024–25. Compared to that, the latest collection marks around 15% growth, which officials described as a significant achievement for the commissionerate.
Officials said the coordinated efforts of VAT officials and employees across Sylhet, Moulvibazar, Sunamganj and Habiganj divisions played a key role in achieving the growth.
The expansion of VAT registration coverage, widening of the VAT network, increased submission of online VAT returns, scrutiny of returns, strengthened audit activities, settlement of cases and regular surveys contributed to the positive trend in revenue collection.
The Customs, Excise and VAT Commissionerate, Sylhet, also credited the achievement to the spontaneous participation of businesses and increased awareness among taxpayers.
The commissionerate expressed gratitude to the Sylhet Chamber of Commerce and Industry, different trade bodies, business associations and regular VAT-paying businesses for their cooperation.
Commissioner Khandaker Nazmul Haque said the commissionerate is working to further enhance revenue collection through a modern, transparent and technology-driven VAT management system.
He expressed optimism that the growth momentum would continue while maintaining a business-friendly environment and ensuring the revenue needed to support the government’s development activities.
