Bangladesh signs 5-year deal with US to import 7 lakh tonnes of wheat annually

Bangladesh has entered into a five-year agreement with the United States to import 700,000 tonnes of wheat annually at competitive prices, aiming to bolster national food security and nutritional standards.

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed on 20 July at the Ministry of Food’s conference room in Dhaka. The agreement outlines a long-term partnership to ensure a stable food supply in the country, according to a press release from the ministry.

On behalf of the Bangladesh government, Md Abul Hasanath Humayun Kabir, Director General of the Directorate General of Food, signed the MoU. Joseph K. Sowers, Vice President of US Wheat Associates, signed the agreement on behalf of the United States.

The signing ceremony was attended by Food Secretary Md Masudul Hasan, Food Adviser Ali Imam Majumdar, and US Ambassador to Bangladesh Tracey Ann Jacobson, along with other senior officials from both nations.

“This MoU will open new avenues for mutual trade cooperation and deepen trust between Bangladesh and the United States,” said Food Adviser Ali Imam Majumdar during the event. “Ultimately, it will benefit the people of both countries.”

According to the Ministry of Food, the government has already procured 466,000 tonnes of wheat from the international market in the 2024–25 fiscal year.
