US does not support any specific individual or party: Chargé d’Affaires

The United States has reaffirmed that it does not support any particular political party, individual, or outcome in Bangladesh’s upcoming national election.

Speaking to reporters after meeting with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A. M. M. Nasiruddin in Dhaka on Monday, US Chargé d’Affaires Traci N. Jacobson said the election is entirely a matter for the Bangladeshi people to decide.

This was the first meeting between a senior US embassy official and the CEC since the August 5, 2024, mass uprising that led to the fall of the Awami League government.

“Many rumors and conspiracy theories are circulating. I want to make clear the US government’s position,” Jacobson said. “We support the initiatives of the interim government, led by Professor Muhammad Yunus, and the Election Commission to ensure that free and fair elections can be held early next year.”

She emphasized that while the US engages with political parties and leaders to understand their goals and commitments, it does not endorse any side. “We do not support any party, we do not support any politician, and we do not support any outcome. This is solely the decision of the Bangladeshi people,” Jacobson noted.

The US envoy added that Washington hopes the election will be conducted peacefully and reflect the aspirations of Bangladesh’s citizens, ultimately leading to the establishment of a successful democratic government.

She concluded by extending best wishes for a successful election in Bangladesh.
