Students of Dhaka College have blocked the Science Lab intersection in the capital, demanding that higher secondary (HSC) classes at the institution continue as before.
They fear that with the recent integration of seven colleges into a new university, higher secondary education at Dhaka College may be discontinued.
“We are deeply concerned,” said Russell, a student of Dhaka College. “This is a historic institution where higher secondary education has always been part of its identity. Now that the seven colleges have been integrated under a university framework, we fear new admissions for the HSC level may stop. That’s why we’re protesting—to urge the authorities to continue these classes.”
The demonstration began around 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, when students gathered at the Science Lab intersection and blocked vehicular movement. The road closure during the first working day of the week caused severe traffic congestion, leaving office-goers stranded and frustrated.
Police have been in communication with the students, urging them to clear the road. Dhaka College authorities have also been informed, and teachers, along with law enforcement officers, are attempting to persuade students to withdraw the blockade. They assured that the demand would be conveyed to higher authorities in the government.
However, the students remain firm in their position and have refused to leave the streets. Ramna Division Deputy Commissioner of Police Masud Alam said that efforts are ongoing to restore normal traffic through discussions with the students and teachers.
Earlier this year, on March 26, the government announced the establishment of a new university combining seven government colleges in Dhaka. The University Grants Commission (UGC) later proposed the name Dhaka Central University.
The seven affiliated colleges are Dhaka College, Eden Mohila College, Begum Badrunnesa Government Women’s College, Shaheed Suhrawardy College, Kabi Nazrul Government College, Government Bangla College (Mirpur), and Government Titumir College.
Meanwhile, students of the seven colleges have called for the swift implementation of the “Dhaka Central University Act 2025.” They have also announced a peaceful march towards the Education Building on Abdul Gani Road and College Road on Monday, October 13, to press for their demands.
