The government has appointed two senior professors from Jahangirnagar University to key administrative positions, naming them Pro-Vice Chancellors for academic and administrative affairs.
According to separate gazette notifications issued on Saturday by the Secondary and Higher Education Division under the Ministry of Education, the appointments were approved by the President of Bangladesh, who also serves as the university’s Chancellor.
Professor Dr Md Shamsul Alam from the Department of Government and Politics has been appointed Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic), while Professor Dr Muhammad Nazrul Islam from the Department of Mathematics will serve as Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration).
Officials said the appointments were made under Section 13(1) of the Jahangirnagar University Order, 1973.
Both officials will serve a term of four years from the date they assume office or until they reach the age of retirement, whichever comes first.
They will receive salaries, allowances and other benefits in line with existing government rules and will carry out duties assigned under university regulations, statutes and instructions from the Vice-Chancellor.
The notifications also state that the two Pro-Vice Chancellors must remain on campus full-time during their tenure.
The President, in his capacity as Chancellor, will retain the authority to cancel the appointments if required.
