The teachers‍‍` association of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (Kuet) has said that it will not accept the resignation of the Vice-Chancellor (VC) Mohammad Masud solely on the demand of a section of protesting students.

"We are firmly standing by the dignity of the vice-chancellor‍‍`s position, which is also the dignity of a teacher," said Md Faruk Hossain, general secretary of KUET Teachers‍‍` Association, during a press conference held at the Kuet auditorium at 1:30pm today, reports The Daily Star.

"If the government finds any fault or misconduct, they will take action. But unless that happens, we strongly oppose any forced resignation under pressure from any group," he added.

He added that teachers have also faced harassment by students during this unrest.

"Until there is justice for the harassment of teachers, we will refrain from engaging in any academic activities," he said.

Md Shahidul Islam, president of the teachers‍‍` association, expressed disappointment over what he called the education adviser‍‍`s one-sided engagement during his visit to the campus.

"We had hoped he would meet with us as well. We are deeply hurt that he did not," he said.

Ashraful Ghani Bhuiyan of the electrical and electronic engineering department said Kuet‍‍`s reputation was being tarnished. "To uphold that reputation, teachers will stand firm in their stance," he added.

A section of students at Kuet have been staging a hunger strike demanding the resignation of their VC. Today at 10:00am, Education Adviser C R Abrar visited the campus and repeatedly urged the students to call off their hunger strike. However, the students remained firm in their one-point demand and refused to call off the strike without the VC‍‍`s resignation.
