The long-awaited decision to create a new university from the seven affiliated colleges has been confirmed.

Shafiqul Alam, the Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, shared the update during a press briefing held on Sunday.

Alam said, "The decision has been made to bring these seven colleges under a single university. The proposed name for this new institution is Dhaka Central University."

For years, students from these seven colleges—previously affiliated with Dhaka University (DU)—have been calling for their own independent university.

Their movement intensified last year, particularly after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government on August 5, following a mass uprising by students and citizens.

The seven colleges in question were first brought under DU‍‍`s affiliation back in 2017.

These include Dhaka College, Eden Mohila College, Government Shaheed Suhrawardy College, Kabi Nazrul Government College, Begum Badrunnesa Government Mohila College, Mirpur Government Bangla College, and Government Titumir College.

This recent development marks a significant step towards addressing the long-standing demand for a distinct institution for these colleges, which have historically been under the administration of Dhaka University.

With the official name now proposed, the next steps for the formation of Dhaka Central University are likely to follow soon.
