As many languages are being destroyed, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday emphasized the importance of study to preserve, revitalize, and promote the mother tongues of the world.
"I always prioritize research. The reason is that nothing can be enriched without conducting study, she explained.
The premier came up with this while inaugurating a four-day long program of the International Mother Language Institute at Segunbagicha to mark the Martyrs’ Day and International Mother Language Day – 2023.
She said that the government will fund fellowships for research on languages at the International Mother Language Institute.
"I believe that this institute has a duty to preserve all of the languages spoken around the world, to study them, and to be knowledgeable about their histories. I believe that is possible," she remarked.
"After taking office in 2009, we have increased the literacy rate to 75.2%. So, in terms of education, we are progressing, she mentioned.
