The government today appointed Md Hazrat Ali, a professor at Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (Cuet), as the acting vice-chancellor of Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (Kuet).
He will carry out the responsibilities of the vice-chancellor on a temporary basis until a full-time appointment is made, according to a notification issued by the Ministry of Education.
Prof Hazrat Ali, a Grade-1 professor of civil engineering at Cuet, will receive salary and allowances equivalent to his current post. He will also be entitled to all other facilities, the notification added.
It further stated that the newly appointed VC must stay on the Kuet campus and discharge his duties as the university`s chief executive officer. The president, who is also the university chancellor, may cancel the appointment at any time if deemed necessary.
The move came after the Ministry of Education recently relieved Kuet Vice-Chancellor Prof Muhammad Masud and Pro-Vice-chancellor Prof Sheikh Shariful Alam of their duties amid ongoing student protests on campus.
According to earlier statements by government officials, a search committee will soon be formed to recommend names for the appointment of a permanent VC and pro-VC. Until then, the acting VC will be responsible for overseeing administrative and academic operations at the university.
