Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announced to cancel the proposed pension scheme for employees of public universities, autonomous institutions, and government entities.
She came up with this announcement following a meeting with leaders of the Coordination Council of Professionals (Peshajibi Samannay Parishad) at her official residence Ganabhaban on Saturday (August 3).
She also expressed her wish to hold dialogue with the students who were protesting for quota reformation in government jobs of Bangladesh.
After reforming the quota followed by weeklong blood shade during violence, the demonstrators are now protesting to address nine key demands, including justice for those who have been killed.
According to official government figures, some 147 people died during the violence centering the quota movement.
However, media reports suggest that the unofficial death toll is significantly higher, surpassing 200.
PM also expressed her commitment on Saturday`s same meeting that every murder will be prosecuted.
Earlier, on March 13, the Ministry of Finance issued a notification to include public university affiliates in the Prottoy pension scheme.
In response, teachers and officials organized various protests, including human chains, half-day strikes, and distributing memorandums. When their demands remained unmet, they escalated to a complete strike.
