Quota movement death toll now six

Another young man died after being injured in the clash in the Science Lab area of ​​the capital. His name was not immediately known. He died in the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) around 7 pm on Tuesday.

With this the death, second in Dhaka alone, toll in the nationwide attacks on the anti-quota protesters surged to six. 

In Chittagong, another individual, critically injured, succumbed during clashes between quota protestors and Chhatra League members in Sholoshahar area, bringing the total death toll in the district to three.

Chittagong Metropolitan Police Commissioner Saiful Islam confirmed the development, stating that the identity of the latest victim could not be immediately determined.

The other victims are Md Faruq, 32, and Md Wasim,22. Faruoq is said to be an employee of a furniture shop and Wasim is a student of Sociology Department of Chittagong College.

Marks of bullet wounds were found on Faruq’s chest, a doctor at Chittagong Medical College Hospital said.

The incident happened following a clash between the quota protestors and the BCL in Chattogram.

In Dhaka, a youth aged around 25 was killed in a clash in front of Dhaka College in the capital on Tuesday afternoon. His identity could not be immediately.

The death happened amid sporadic clashes in the area between Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and students protesting the quota system near Science Lab area.

He was rescued by a passerby and brought to the emergency department of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in a serious condition around 5:30pm. After the examination, the doctor in charge declared him dead, said Bachchu Mia, in-charge of DMCH police camp.

In Rangpur, a student of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur has been killed as the students and jobseekers, demonstrating seeking reform in government quota system, locked in a brawl with the police and the activists of the BCL in the northern district.

The deceased, Abu Saeed, 22, is a student of 12th batch of English Department at the university. He hailed from the district’s Pirganj upazila in Rangpur, said proctor Shariful Islam.

The clash broke out at Park intersection of Rangpur in front of the university around 2pm on Tuesday.

At the time the police shot rubber bullets and hurled tear gas shells to disperse the protesters, leaving more than 100 of the latter injured.

Sayeed received was one of them. Later, he was taken to Rangpur Medical College Hospital where he was declared brought dead.

These are the first reported deaths in the ongoing nationwide anti-quota movement that has not only rocked the country’s political arena, but garnered international attention.

After Monday’s clash and during the overnight brawl at different places, romours were spread claiming multiple deaths.
