Shammo murder: Protesters call VC to step down

Shammo was fatally stabbed by unknown assailants inside Suhrawardy Udyan late on the night of May 13.

Leaders and activists of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) at Dhaka University staged a sit-in protesting the murder of Shahriar Alam Shammo and demanding the resignation of the university’s vice-chancellor and proctor, and demanded a safer campus environment.

The protest began around noon, when the demonstrators marched from Hakim Chattar and gathered in front of the vice-chancellor‍‍`s office, where the sit-in continued into the afternoon.

Shammo was a master‍‍`s student at the Institute of Education and Research and served as the literary and publication secretary of a student political group in Sir A.F. Rahman Hall.

Speaking at the protest, the group’s president Ganesh Chandra Roy Sahos said that 13 days had passed since Shammo’s murder, yet there had been no progress in the investigation.

He criticized the university administration for repeated failures, referencing a series of recent violent incidents on campus that have gone unpunished.

General Secretary Nahiduzzaman Shipon echoed the call for the vice-chancellor and proctor to step down, stating that the lack of justice for Shammo not only dishonors a fellow student leader but also undermines the safety of the entire student body.

He emphasized the increasing number of violent incidents like stabbings and murders on campus while the administration remains passive.

Shammo was fatally stabbed by unknown assailants inside Suhrawardy Udyan late on the night of May 13.
