Students from the seven government colleges affiliated with Dhaka University staged a sit-in in front of the Education Bhaban in Dhaka on Monday morning, demanding the finalization of the draft of the Dhaka Central University Act 2025 and the immediate issuance of an ordinance.
Due to the protest, vehicular movement from the Education Bhaban area toward the Secretariat came to a standstill, causing severe traffic congestion in surrounding areas.
Around 11:20 a.m., hundreds of students from Shaheed Suhrawardy College and Kabi Nazrul Government College gathered at the site, chanting slogans such as “No delay in issuing the ordinance” and “No commercialization of education.” Students from other colleges later joined the demonstration.
To prevent the protesters from moving toward the Secretariat, police set up barricades on nearby roads.
Kazi Romana Nasrin, Additional Deputy Commissioner of the Ramna Traffic Zone, said, “All roads adjacent to the Education Bhaban are closed due to the student blockade. Vehicles are using alternative routes, but heavy traffic has caused severe congestion. We are working to keep traffic moving as smoothly as possible.”
One of the protesting students from Shaheed Suhrawardy College said, “The government announced a separate public university for seven colleges, but the ordinance has not yet been issued. It must be done today, or we will go for tougher action.”
On March 26 this year, the government announced the establishment of a separate public university named Dhaka Central University for the seven colleges — Dhaka College, Eden Mohila College, Begum Badrunnessa Government Women’s College, Shaheed Suhrawardy College, Kabi Nazrul Government College, Mirpur Bangla College, and Government Titumir College — based on a proposal from the University Grants Commission (UGC).
