Women Journalists of Tomorrow: Nurturing Leadership in Bangladesh’s Newsrooms

Participants of the “AGILE Women Media Leaders of Tomorrow” workshop at BCDM, Gazipur — a three-day program empowering young women to lead Bangladesh’s future newsrooms

For three transformative days, twenty young women from the University of Chittagong and Daffodil International University gathered to explore what it means to be a woman in journalism — to find their voices, strengthen their confidence, and step into leadership.

The AGILE Women Media Leaders of Tomorrow workshop created a space where participants could share personal experiences, challenges, and ambitions while learning directly from established women media professionals. Through interactive discussions and leadership sessions, the participants reflected on how to navigate newsroom dynamics, manage challenges, and grow into strong, ethical, and resilient leaders.

From understanding the difference between leadership and management to confronting real-world issues such as newsroom safety, harassment, and emotional resilience, every session provided practical insights into the realities of being a woman in today’s media landscape.

Speakers emphasized that women’s leadership in journalism is not just about representation — it’s about transforming the newsroom culture. Participants learned how to build supportive professional networks, seek mentorship, and surround themselves with individuals who inspire growth and accountability.

By the end of the workshop, each participant left with a renewed sense of purpose, clarity, and courage — ready to lead, report, and amplify women’s voices in the media.

About the Workshop

The AGILE Women Media Leaders of Tomorrow program was organized by the Fojo Media Institute, in collaboration with the Communication and Journalism Educators Network (CJEN), and co-funded by the European Union. It took place from 26 to 28 October at BCDM, Gazipur.

The workshop brought together promising young women from the Department of Communication and Journalism, University of Chittagong, and the Department of Journalism, Media and Communication, Daffodil International University.

Sessions were led by leading journalists and mentors, including Kersti Forsberg (veteran Swedish journalist and former Executive Director, Fojo Media Institute), Sheikh Sabihah Alam (Dhaka Bureau Chief, AFP), Fahim Ahmed (CEO, Jamuna Television), SK Tanvir Mahmud (Editor, GIJN Bangla), Jesmin Papri (Fellow, Rest of World), and Mariem Aziz Mourin (Staff Reporter, News24).

Together, they inspired participants to pursue journalism with integrity, confidence, and vision — shaping a future where more women lead newsrooms and redefine the media narrative in Bangladesh
