DGHS issues new guidelines to streamline dengue treatment in hospitals

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has issued new instructions to ensure more organized and effective treatment for dengue patients in government hospitals across the country.

According to the directives, all hospitals must immediately set up dedicated wards and establish specialized treatment teams for dengue care. The health authorities believe these measures will improve patient services, reduce risks, and enhance overall treatment quality.

The instructions, signed by Dr. Abu Hossain Md. Moinul Ahsan, Director of Hospitals and Clinics at DGHS, were issued on Tuesday (16 September).

The guidelines stipulate that hospitals must ensure proper arrangements for admitted dengue patients, including NS1 testing, emergency care, and adequate availability of medicines.

Patients should be kept in designated wards or rooms, and ICU access must be prioritized where necessary. Special responsibilities have also been assigned to doctors and nurses managing dengue cases.

Additionally, a board comprising medicine, pediatrics, and other specialist doctors must be formed to oversee the treatment of dengue and chikungunya patients.

Under this board, a dedicated team of medical officers, residents, and trained doctors will provide care exclusively for these patients. Suspected dengue cases visiting outpatient departments will also receive treatment under the same board and designated medical team.

The directive further instructs hospital directors to coordinate with city corporations or municipal authorities to conduct mosquito control and sanitation drives around hospital premises.

Weekly dengue coordination meetings are to be held every Saturday at 10 a.m., chaired by the hospital director, supervisor, and civil surgeon.
