At least 14 migrants remained missing after a boat carrying undocumented passengers sank off the coast of Pangkor Island, Malaysian authorities said.

According to the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency, the boat was carrying 37 migrants believed to be from Indonesia.

Authorities said 23 people have so far been rescued after local fishermen spotted survivors floating in the sea early Monday.

Officials said the migrants had left Indonesia on May 9 and were heading to several destinations in Malaysia, including Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Selangor.

Rescue teams have launched a search operation using boats, helicopters and surveillance aircraft to find the missing passengers.

The rescued migrants were later handed over to police for further investigation.

Malaysia is a major destination for migrant workers from poorer Asian countries, but illegal sea journeys arranged by trafficking groups often end in deadly accidents.
