An Israeli airstrike in southern Lebanon has killed journalist Amal Khalil, according to her employer Al-Akhbar.
The strike hit the town of Al-Tiri, where Khalil had taken shelter after earlier explosions in the area. Rescue teams later pulled her body from the debris.
She had been reporting on the ongoing Israel-Hezbollah conflict when the situation escalated. Witness accounts and local officials said an initial strike hit near her location, forcing her and others to move into a nearby house, which was subsequently targeted.
Efforts to reach those trapped were reportedly delayed, with authorities alleging that access routes were hit and emergency teams could not immediately enter the area.
Lebanese officials strongly condemned the incident. Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said targeting journalists and hindering rescue operations could amount to serious violations of international law.
Information Minister Paul Morcos described the killing as a grave breach of humanitarian principles.
Media watchdogs and press freedom advocates have also raised alarm over the risks faced by journalists covering conflict zones.
Khalil had long reported from southern Lebanon and was among those documenting developments on the ground as tensions intensified.
