Bangladesh has been ranked 181st in the 2024 edition of the Nomad Passport Index, released yesterday by global consultancy firm Nomad Capitalist.

The index evaluates the strength of 200 passports worldwide, taking into account not only visa-free access but also factors such as taxation, global perception, and personal freedoms, reports The Daily Star.

Bangladeshi passport holders can currently travel to 50 countries either visa-free or by obtaining a visa on arrival. The country scored 38 out of a possible 110.

Neighbouring Nepal ranked just above Bangladesh with a score of 39.5, while Myanmar followed closely behind at 182nd with 37.5 points.

India held the 148th position with a score of 47.5, whereas Pakistan ranked near the bottom at 195th, scoring 32.

Ireland has claimed the top spot for the first time with a score of 109, edging out traditional European frontrunners such as Switzerland, Luxembourg, and Sweden.

According to Nomad Capitalist, Ireland‍‍`s rise is attributed to its favourable tax policies, high global reputation, and flexible citizenship laws.

"Ireland shook up the rankings, thanks to the country‍‍`s strong international reputation, business-friendly tax policies, and overall citizenship flexibility," Javier Correa, a research associate at the firm, told CNBC Travel.

The index differs from other global passport rankings by evaluating passports based on five weighted criteria: visa-free travel (50%), taxation (20%), global perception (10%), the ability to hold dual citizenship (10%), and personal freedom (10%).

The highest-ranking non-European passports belong to the United Arab Emirates and New Zealand, both tied at 10th.

Despite its lower overall score, the UAE allows visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 179 countries—three more than Ireland.

The Nomad Passport Index aims to offer a more comprehensive perspective on the value of citizenships, particularly for those seeking greater personal or financial mobility.
