A strong 7.4-magnitude earthquake shook western Colombia on Monday, sending people out of homes and buildings as tremors were also felt in neighbouring Ecuador.
The US Geological Survey and Colombia’s geological agency both recorded the quake at magnitude 7.4. They said the earthquake occurred at a considerable depth, with its epicentre located near San Jose del Palmar.
The town is around 400 kilometres west of Colombia’s capital, Bogota.
There were no immediate reports of deaths, injuries or major damage following the earthquake.
The quake comes weeks after two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela in late June.
The tremors, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, destroyed hundreds of buildings and left more than 5,000 people dead.
