A powerful explosion at a fireworks factory in central China has killed at least 21 people and injured dozens more, authorities said.

The blast took place on Monday in Liuyang, a major fireworks-producing area under Changsha in Hunan province.

State media reported that several buildings at the factory were destroyed, while thick smoke continued to rise from the site a day later.

Nearly 500 rescue workers were deployed to search for survivors and clear debris. Residents in nearby areas were evacuated due to safety concerns, as explosive materials were stored close to the site.

Officials said the cause of the explosion is under investigation, and the person responsible for the factory has been detained.

Chinese President Xi Jinping ordered full rescue efforts and called for strict action following the incident.

Authorities also used water spraying and special equipment, including robots, to reduce risks during rescue operations.

Liuyang is known for its long history of fireworks production, but accidents at such facilities have occurred in the past, raising ongoing safety concerns.
