Yemen’s Houthi rebels have claimed responsibility for a missile attack on Israel, signaling their entry into the ongoing regional conflict involving the US, Israel and Iran.

In a statement aired on Al-Masirah TV, Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said the group carried out the strike and warned that such attacks would continue until their goals are achieved and what they described as “aggression” stops.

The Israeli military said the missile was successfully intercepted before it could cause damage. According to reports by Al Jazeera, the target was believed to be sensitive military sites in southern Israel.

Air raid sirens were heard in areas including Beersheba for the third straight night, as tensions remain high with ongoing attacks linked to Iran and Hezbollah.

The Houthis, who have controlled Sanaa since 2014, had mostly stayed out of the broader conflict until now. However, during the Israel-Hamas war, they carried out multiple attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea, hitting more than 100 vessels over time.

Earlier in 2024, the administration of Donald Trump launched strikes targeting Houthi positions, though the operation ended within weeks.

The latest missile attack highlights how the conflict is spreading across the region, raising concerns about further instability and its impact on global security and markets.
