An Indian Air Force transport aircraft crashed and caught fire while attempting to land at an airbase in Assam on Saturday, prompting an emergency response and an investigation into the incident.
The accident involved an Antonov AN-32 aircraft and occurred inside the premises of the Air Force Station in Jorhat, one of the Indian Air Force`s key installations in northeastern India.
According to initial reports, the aircraft went down during the landing phase before bursting into flames. Emergency personnel rushed to the scene to contain the fire and assess the situation.
Authorities have not yet confirmed whether there were any casualties or injuries, and details regarding the condition of the crew remain unclear.
The Indian Air Force acknowledged the incident and said a detailed assessment was underway. Officials indicated that more information would be released after preliminary findings become available.
An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the crash.
Reacting to the incident, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said authorities were awaiting further updates from the Indian Air Force and emergency agencies.
The AN-32 is a twin-engine military transport aircraft that has been a key part of the Indian Air Force`s logistics fleet for decades. Designed for operations in challenging weather and high-altitude regions, the aircraft is widely used for transporting personnel, cargo and military supplies to remote locations.
The crash has renewed attention on aviation safety within the armed forces. Earlier this year, an Indian Air Force Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter jet crashed during a routine mission in Assam`s Karbi Anglong district, resulting in the deaths of both pilots.
Officials are continuing to monitor the situation at the Jorhat airbase as rescue and assessment operations proceed.
