Prime Minister Tarique Rahman arrived in the district this morning on a daylong tour to attend different programmes, including inauguration of a canal excavation and nationwide tree plantation campaign.
An aircraft carrying the Prime Minister accompanied by his spouse Dr Zubaida Rahman landed at Cox’s Bazar International Airport here around 9:53 am, said Prime Minister Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Ruman.
He said earlier the aircraft departed Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka around 9:00 am.
The Prime Minister is scheduled to return to Dhaka by air at night after completing his official engagements here.
On his arrival at the Cox’s Bazar International Airport, Tarique Rahman was received by Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism M Rashiduzzaman Millat, State Minister for Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs and Land Mir Mohammed Helal Uddin, State Minister for Textiles and Jute Md Shariful Alam and Cox’s Bazar Deputy Commissioner MA Mannan.
After completing formalities at the airport, the Prime Minister was heading directly to the Patli Canal re-excavation programme venue in Pmkhali Union by road where he is scheduled to inaugurate the re-excavation work of the canal and address a rally.
According to the tour schedule, Tarique Rahman is scheduled to visit the Dulahazara Safari Park and formally launch the nationwide tree plantation programme at Malumghat Reserve Forest as part of the government’s plan to plant 25 crore trees over the next five years across the country.
He is also scheduled to visit Pekua to offer Ziarat at the grave of July mass uprising martyr Md Wasim and meet members of his family there.
The Prime Minister will lay the foundation stones of the newly established Pekua Municipality and Matamuhuri Upazila.
In the afternoon, the Prime Minister will address a public rally organized by Cox’s Bazar district BNP at the Chakaria Upazila Bus Terminal.
In the evening, the premier will inspect the Marine Drive road and the sea beach. Later, he will attend a civic rally at Long Beach Hotel there before departing for the capital.
After spending more than a decade and a half in London, Tarique Rahman returned to the country on December 25 last year.
This is Tarique Rahman`s first visit to Cox`s Bazar after assuming office as Prime Minister following the BNP’s landslide victory in the February 12 elections.
