Three police officers, including a sub-inspector (SI), have been withdrawn following allegations of assault and harassment against national team cricketer Nayeem Hasan while he was returning home from Chattogram Airport under the guise of being “DB police.”
In the same incident, a case has been filed at Khulshi Police Station by the victim’s family, and one person has been arrested, officials said.
The action was taken on Saturday. The incident reportedly took place on Friday night (June 12), shortly after Nayeem returned to Chattogram following a Dhaka Premier League match. He was allegedly harassed while traveling from the airport to his home.
According to reports, Nayeem was returning home in a CNG-run auto-rickshaw when traffic police stopped the vehicle near a toll plaza. One traffic officer reportedly accompanied them up to Lalkhan Bazar. Later, two individuals—one in police uniform and another in plain clothes—attempted to search the vehicle.
Recounting the incident, Nayeem said: Our flight landed in Chattogram at 10:20 pm. We couldn’t find a vehicle, so I was going home by CNG. A traffic police officer stopped us near the toll plaza and accompanied us to Lalkhan Bazar. Then a uniformed police officer and another in plain clothes came and tried to search the vehicle. I thought they would just check our bags.
He further alleged: SI Shafiq pushed me into the CNG, locked the door, and told me, ‘You are an accused, stay quiet, don’t say a word.’ He grabbed my collar and hit me with a baton. I was physically assaulted and terrified.
Nayeem claimed that even after his identity was confirmed by bystanders, the officers did not respond. They grabbed my throat. I called my father while shouting. They also took my mobile phone. Many people at the scene confirmed my identity, but they still held me by the throat, he said.
He added that he was later taken to a police station. I told the Officer-in-Charge who I was. He told me to keep my eyes down while speaking. But later his behavior changed when he started receiving calls from various places confirming my identity, he said.
Nayeem directly accused SI Shafiq of physical assault, saying, He hit me with a baton. I told him he had no right to touch me, but he still assaulted me.
The incident sparked widespread reactions on social media and within the sports community. Following the controversy, the three police officers involved were withdrawn from duty, and one person was arrested based on the filed case.
