The final hospital serving northern Gaza has been shut down following an attack by the Israeli military, with parts of the facility set on fire.
The assault, which took place on Friday, December 27, has left the area without any major healthcare center, as reported by Al Jazeera.
In a post shared on X, the World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed the incident, stating that Israel`s morning operation caused Kamal Adwan Hospital, the last large healthcare facility in northern Gaza, to stop functioning.
The WHO added that initial reports suggest critical parts of the hospital were badly damaged and destroyed during the attack.
The situation worsened when Israeli forces detained the hospital’s director, Husam Abu Safiya, along with several other staff members, according to Gaza`s Ministry of Health.
Before this, Israel’s military acknowledged the assault on Kamal Adwan Hospital, located in Beit Lahia, claiming that Hamas was using the hospital as a base for their operations.
Hamas, however, denied the allegations, accusing Israel of committing a "clear war crime."
In a statement, Hamas said the burning of the hospital was an “obvious war crime” and criticized the Israeli government, accusing them of carrying out war crimes in Gaza with support from the United States and certain Western countries.
They also claimed that these nations are complicit in what they described as an ongoing genocide.
In response to the attack, both Saudi Arabia and Jordan strongly condemned Israel`s actions.
The foreign ministries of both countries issued statements, calling the assault a violation of international law.
