KP Sharma Oli resigns as Nepal’s prime minister amid mass protests

Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned from office on Tuesday afternoon, his secretariat confirmed.

The decision came in the wake of a wave of youth-led demonstrations that had erupted across the country, with protesters demanding accountability over corruption, restrictions on freedoms, and police violence.

The resignation came after two consecutive days of mass protests spearheaded by Gen Z activists.

On Monday alone, at least 19 people were killed and around 500 others injured in violent clashes near the Federal Parliament and other parts of Kathmandu.

Despite the imposition of curfews across the Kathmandu Valley and the deployment of heavy security forces, demonstrations have continued to swell in the capital.
