Nuclear deal on the horizon? Trump seeks diplomatic path with Iran

U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed optimism about reaching a nuclear deal with Iran that could be settled without Israel having to carry out any military strikes.

He hopes that the nuclear standoff with Iran will be resolved through diplomacy, sparing the need for military intervention by Israel.

This statement from Trump comes at a time when reports suggest that he plans to appoint his Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, as the key coordinator on the Iran issue.

Trump‍‍`s comments point toward seeking a diplomatic solution rather than a military one to address Iran‍‍`s nuclear ambitions.

On January 23, during an Oval Office briefing, Trump was asked if he would support an Israeli attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities.

He responded, “I won’t comment on that,” but mentioned that he would be meeting with senior officials soon to discuss the matter further.

He added,

“I hope it can be resolved in such a way that more drastic steps don’t have to be taken. It would really be good if this could be solved easily.”

The president went on to say, “I hope Iran will agree to a deal. But if they don’t, that’s fine too.”

Just a day earlier, on January 22, during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Iran’s Vice President for Strategic Affairs, Javed Zarif, also expressed hope for a new nuclear agreement with Trump.

Zarif stated, “I hope that the second Trump administration will be more serious, more focused, and more realistic.”

In 2015, several global powers, including China, France, Germany, Russia, the EU, the UK, the U.S., and Iran, reached a deal known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Under this deal, Iran agreed to limit its nuclear activities in exchange for the lifting of various international sanctions.

However, in 2018, Trump withdrew the U.S. from the agreement and reimposed sanctions on Iran. On the other hand, Joe Biden had indicated that the U.S. might return to the deal if he were to take office.

Although several discussions have taken place between global powers to revive the agreement, they have not been successful so far.

With Trump recently starting his second term as U.S. President on January 20, the possibility of a renewed nuclear deal with Iran has come back into focus. Over the last few months, several European nations have held talks with Iran about the agreement.

It remains to be seen how Trump will approach the issue of a nuclear deal with Iran going forward.
