In a bid to halt the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, representatives from Russia and the United States have once again convened in Saudi Arabia for crucial talks.
The meeting, held today in Riyadh, aims to bring about a temporary ceasefire in the conflict that has been raging for three years.
The news was first reported by AFP.
Discussions on a ceasefire between the two global powers have taken place several times before, but so far, no breakthrough has been achieved.
However, the talks resumed today under a new initiative, with hopes of significant progress this time around.
Since coming into office, U.S. President Donald Trump has been pushing hard for an end to the war in Ukraine.
He believes the ongoing discussions in Riyadh could lead to meaningful progress.
"These talks could open the door to real progress on the ceasefire," Trump said, optimistic about the potential outcome of the meeting.
Despite numerous ceasefire proposals from both Russia and Ukraine, fighting between the two sides has continued unabated.
While the talks offer a glimmer of hope, the reality on the ground remains fraught with tension.
The meeting yesterday between U.S. and Russian officials in Riyadh extended late into the night, but no definitive decisions were reached.
Yet, the tone following the talks seemed cautiously optimistic. Ukraine`s Defense Minister Rustem Umerov shared on social media that fruitful discussions took place.
He highlighted that key issues such as energy were discussed and reiterated Ukraine`s commitment to achieving lasting peace.
"Ukraine is working tirelessly to make our goal of legitimate and lasting peace a reality," Umerov wrote.
Steve Witkoff, President Trump`s envoy, also commented on the ongoing negotiations.
He emphasized that any future agreement could pave the way for a "complete ceasefire" and hinted that today`s meeting may yield further progress.
"We may see some real movement on the ground after today`s discussions," Witkoff added.
However, Russia`s stance on the ceasefire remains somewhat reserved.
Following the discussions, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov, while speaking to Russia`s state television, expressed cautious optimism.
"We are still at the very beginning of this path," Peskov said, tempering expectations about immediate results.
As the talks continue, the world watches closely, hoping that these renewed discussions will finally bring an end to one of the most prolonged and devastating conflicts in recent history.
