Former Chief Justice Sushila Karki was sworn in on Monday as Nepal’s interim prime minister at a special ceremony at Sheetal Niwas.
President Ram Chandra Paudel administered the oath of office in the presence of the vice president, chief justice, senior officials, security chiefs and members of the diplomatic corps.
President Paudel appointed Karki by invoking constitutional powers to uphold the Constitution and promote national unity.
Acting on the prime minister’s recommendation, he directed the interim government to conduct new parliamentary elections within six months.
Karki’s appointment follows weeks of Gen-Z–led protests demanding the dissolution of the House of Representatives and the creation of a non-partisan administration.
Although a three-member cabinet was initially proposed, no consensus has yet been reached on the ministerial nominees. As a result, Prime Minister Karki will temporarily oversee all government portfolios herself.
Her appointment also marks a historic milestone as she becomes Nepal’s first woman to serve as prime minister.
