There is no chance of Canada becoming a part of the U.S.: Trudeau

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has made it clear that Canada will never become a state of the United States, following comments made by U.S. President Donald Trump.

In a post shared on social media platform X, Trudeau said, “There is no chance of Canada becoming a part of the U.S. Our two countries’ workers and communities benefit immensely from being each other’s largest commercial and security partners.”

He went on to emphasize that Canada’s relationship with the U.S. is built on strong cooperation and mutual benefit, and not on any notion of Canada joining the U.S.

Mélanie Joly, Canada’s Foreign Minister, also joined in on defending the country’s independence.

She criticized Trump’s comments by stating, “He (Trump) clearly has no understanding of Canada’s strengths. Our economy is strong. Our people are strong. We will never retreat in the face of threats.”

Her remarks reflect the government’s firm stance on maintaining Canada’s sovereignty.

Trump’s comments had come earlier this week in a post on his own social media platform, Truth Social.

He claimed, "A lot of people in Canada want to become our 51st state. The U.S. will not bear the immense trade deficit and subsidy pressures to sustain Canada. Justin Trudeau knew this, which is why he resigned."

He further added, "If Canada were to join the U.S., there would be no tariffs, taxes would be much lower, and Canada would be completely safe from the threats posed by Russian and Chinese vessels. Together, we’d form a great nation."

This isn’t the first time that Trump has hinted at such an idea. Back in December, during a meeting with Trudeau, Trump repeated the suggestion, saying that Canada should consider becoming part of the U.S.

However, Trudeau and his government have remained firm in their commitment to Canada’s independence.

This back-and-forth between the two leaders has sparked attention in both countries, as it continues to highlight differences in their political views and their approach to international relations.
