Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump held a phone conversation on Monday focusing on the ongoing conflict with Iran and efforts to settle the war in Ukraine, the Kremlin said.
According to Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov, the nearly hour-long call was “businesslike and constructive.” The conversation was initiated by Trump and marked the first known direct contact between the two leaders since late December.
During the call, Putin presented ideas for a political and diplomatic resolution to the Iran conflict and discussed consultations he has held with leaders in the Persian Gulf and other international figures. Trump, in turn, shared his assessment of the ongoing U.S.–Israeli military operations in the region.
Putin also briefed Trump on recent developments in the Ukraine war, claiming Russian forces were advancing and suggesting that this could encourage Kyiv to pursue negotiations for a settlement.
The two leaders also touched on developments in Venezuela in relation to the global oil market, Ushakov said, describing the call as substantive and important for future cooperation on international issues.
Officials said both sides agreed to maintain regular communication following the conversation as tensions continue to rise in multiple global conflict zones.
