Trump suggests reconsidering U.S. exit from WHO

U.S. President Donald Trump has once again altered his position, suggesting that he may reconsider the decision for the United States to exit the World Health Organization (WHO).

Reuters has reported this development.

This comes after he had previously announced that the U.S. would leave the global health body.

After taking office on January 20, Trump had made it clear that the United States would officially exit the WHO.

However, during a rally in Las Vegas on Saturday, he seemed to soften his stance, saying,

"We might reconsider this. I don’t know. Maybe we will. But there are some things that need to be worked out first."

Earlier, Trump had strongly criticized the WHO for its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and other global health crises, accusing the organization of mismanagement.

He had also set a timeline for the U.S. to leave by January 22, 2026. Now, he’s leaving the door open for a change in direction.

The United States has long been the largest contributor to the WHO, providing about 18% of its total funding.

At the Las Vegas rally, Trump expressed dissatisfaction with the fact that the U.S. contributes more to the WHO than China, despite China’s much larger population.

Trump’s criticism of the WHO has been well known, especially during the early months of the pandemic.

In July 2020, he initiated the process to withdraw the U.S. from the organization.

But shortly after President Joe Biden took office in January 2021, he reversed that decision.

The U.S. has been a key member of the WHO since its founding in 1948, contributing a significant portion of its budget.
