Efforts to hold a second round of US-Iran talks in Pakistan face uncertainty as Tehran has yet to confirm its participation ahead of a looming ceasefire deadline.

The proposed meeting is expected to take place in Islamabad, where authorities have already stepped up security arrangements, sealing key areas and deploying additional personnel.

The talks are being planned as a two-week ceasefire between the two sides is set to expire on Wednesday. Diplomats hope the discussions could help extend the truce and create space for broader negotiations.

However, tensions have escalated in recent days. US President Donald Trump warned of possible strikes on Iran’s energy infrastructure if no agreement is reached.

He also claimed that a US naval vessel intercepted an Iranian cargo ship in the Gulf of Oman, an action Tehran has strongly criticised.

Iranian officials have raised concerns over these developments, suggesting the current environment may not be conducive to meaningful talks.

State media in Iran has also cast doubt on whether the meeting will take place.

Meanwhile, Pakistan continues diplomatic efforts to keep dialogue on track.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has spoken with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, emphasising the need for continued engagement.

Diplomatic sources say the immediate goal is to prevent a collapse of the ceasefire, with any long-term agreement likely to require further rounds of negotiation.
