Bangladeshi interim government has decided that Bangladesh Police were set to overhaul their uniforms and logo.
This move comes in response to recent student protests and aims to present a more approachable image to the public.
Home Affairs adviser Brig Gen (retd.) M Shakhawat Hossain has said that police uniforms and logos will be changed.
A police official, who requested anonymity, said on August 11th that the decision was influenced by the need to improve relations with the community.
"In light of the recent violence and the student-led uprising, the current uniform is no longer deemed suitable for everyday police duties," the official explained.
He added: "The new uniform and logo are part of an effort to foster a more people-friendly approach, as advocated by middle and lower-ranked officers in their 11-point demand."
M Shakhawat said: “Many are heartbroken. The police don’t want to work in this uniform anymore. It will be changed very soon. A decision will be taken after a discussion in the cabinet meeting.”
He said in a meeting with a delegation of agitating police members at the Ministry of Home Affairs on Sunday (August 11) afternoon.
In related news, Police Superintendent Zahidul Islam, who heads the Anti-Discrimination Central Coordination Committee of Bangladesh Police, announced that officers will resume their duties on August 12th.
This follows a period of work abstention aimed at pressing their 11-point demands.
Islam stated: "The police, as a law enforcement agency, cannot engage in protests. We have been on work abstention to advance our demands, but the home affairs adviser has promised the formation of an independent police commission. With this assurance, we will return to our duties and perform symbolic work tonight."
