Detectives have filed charges against BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman under the Digital Security Act.
Md Hasanuzzaman, sub-inspector of Detective Branch of Police submitted the charge sheet to the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate`s Court on January 14.
Tarique was listed as a "fugitive" on the charge sheet, and SI Hasanuzzaman, the case`s investigation officer, appealed to the court for issuing an arrest warrant against him.
Tarique received a lawsuit from Shahbagh Police Station on February 25, 2021 for referring to the late president Ziaur Rahman as "the nation`s father of Bangladeshi nationalism".
The case was filed by Zahidul Islam, then the deputy secretary of relief and disaster management for the Chhatra League`s Shahidullah Hall unit at Dhaka University.
Tarique, who now lives in London, was sentenced to various terms of imprisonment in five cases, including the August 21 grenade attack.
