A court has ordered the seizure of income tax records of Bangladesh Awami League Joint General Secretary and former Member of Parliament for Kushtia-3, Mahbubul Alam Hanif, and his wife Fauzia Alam.

The order was issued on Monday by Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md. Sabbir Faiz in response to two separate applications filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). The matter was confirmed by court bench assistant Riaz Hossain.

According to the ACC application, Mahbubul Alam Hanif is accused of acquiring assets worth 273.9 million BDT (27.39 crore taka) beyond known sources of income. He has also been sued over suspicious transactions totaling 866.6 million BDT (86.66 crore taka) through 18 bank accounts, allegedly linked to bribery and corruption.

In another case, Hanif and his wife Fauzia Alam are accused of jointly acquiring unexplained assets worth 46.9 million BDT (4.69 crore taka). They are also accused of suspicious transactions amounting to 331.3 million BDT (33.13 crore taka) through 16 bank accounts.

Investigators said in their petition that seizing their income tax records is necessary for the proper investigation of both cases.
